BEYOND LIMITS!

After a fun day at Belleayre Mountain!

When last have you mustered up the courage and boldness to go beyond your limits?

This weekend I did just that at Belleayre (pronounced Bel-Lair) Mountains. My friends from church and I suited up (layers for days!) and headed out early a.m on Saturday to snowboard. The weather wasn’t ideal (continuous rains throughout the Eastern front) for snowboarding but we went regardless (talk about FAITH!). The rains made the controlling and maneuvering with the board/skis more challenging. Despite the minor hindrance, we had a BLASTT on the trip and rocked the snow trails!

I created a little photomontage for you readers to check out!

Acting a mess snowboarding down!

My dawg Kevin just can't seem to get up!
Sidebar: My boy taught me a few tricks at the high top. What happen coming down was the best rush I've ever felt!!! Riding Batman & Robin (Six Flags) doesn't compare one bit.

The best adventure to take on before SPRING ! I'm so tempted to plan a trip back. Even knowing the aches, pains, and bruises I'm going to encounter.

WE'RE BACCCKK!

Hello Readers,

After two days of resting and rejuvenating my achy bones I’m back in a full effect. I went skiing with some friends this weekend (will feature highlights in later post) and really connected with the slopes if you know what I mean! Stay tuned in for last week’s This Week In Style recap. In addition, MSR readers favorite: “In The Present” and “NEWS Bits.”

In the Present

YOU CAN GO ANYWHERE WITH A GOAL

A life without purpose is like a ship without a rudder.
Goals are dreams that are written down.
The purpose of a goal is to focus your attention.
Your mind will reach toward achievement only when it has a goal.

There is no achievement without goals.

Establish a goal worth working for.
Your goal will keep you going in tough times.
Always have something ahead of you.
Continuously visualize your next step.
Keep moving after you achieve your goal and set another.

Momentum is maintained by always having something to look forward to.
Constantly give yourself something to work for.

Do what you can do well, and do well whatever you can do and you'll achieve any goal that you set for yourself. You can plant your dream with a goal.

*Bonus

Reawaken your curiosity

"What a distressing contrast there is between the radiant intelligence of the child and the feeble mentality of the average adult."

Why is this so?

Young children possess what Zen calls ‘beginner’s mind.’ They are awed and fascinated with the wonder of the world, open to discovering and experiencing new things. Anything is possible. Life is a great adventure. For almost all of us, the systems that ‘educate’ us to be adults stifle our natural joy and curiosity. We lose touch with our innate appreciation of life. We forget how to dream.

The blessing is that with attention, patience and love, we can reawaken our sense of wonder. We can again dance with life.

"The mind WILL be free, or it will be dead."

LBJ: TO SHAPE UP VOGUE COVER WITH GISELE BUN DCHEN

Finally I can let it ooooout!

I heard about two months ago Anna Wintour was tapping into NBA powerhouse LeBron James to grace the April VOGUE cover (Shape Issue). I couldn’t spill the male-style beans or else some folks would have got beheaded (lol). I am happy VOGUE is continuing to diversify their covers with African American figures.

….it has been a long way coming.

I’m excited to see the full-page spreads! I’m thrilled about the cover as well, but nothing compares to seeing a head-on spread. In addition, it’s good to see LeBron on newer publication covers besides the usual sports magazines and basketball journals.

P.S. Vogue--I hope you don't take another basketball in the hand shot. I'm starting to get bored with them.

CPDRC: PRISON DANCE STARS

The largest dance troupe I ever seen.

I’m such a fanatical for ‘CPDRC Prison Dancers’ (and 5 million others)! I heard about these dancers from a show segment and I’ve been part of the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center fan club ever since.

According to CPDRC website, “Security must be approached not only physically but also from the cultural and behavioral context. Inmates at the CPDRC are required to go through a workout regimen. While the goal is to keep the body fit in order to keep the mind fit, such may not actually happen if it is not done in a manner deemed pleasurable. Music, being the language of the soul, is added to that regimen.”

Their most famous publicized dance choreography is M.J.’s Thriller. CNN and many other televised broadcasts ran pieces on CPDRC; highlighting their amazing dance-routines.

I wonder if U.S. prison inmates would be up to having a dance off!

Take a look at their new routine: Soldier Boy meets MC Hammer!

MR. MSR: THE CLASSY ONE

Classy never looked so good!
Great-Grandmother (Soulfully R.I.P) and Mr. MSR radiating classiness

A classic quote I had to share:

"I'm The Landed Gentry

You are well above your peers in exhibiting class. Not only are you cultured, but you are motivated to make a difference. You immediately engage people with your interesting dialogue, and charm them with witty remarks. You never change your behavior to follow the crowd, and people respect you for that."

This personal quote was generated through Facebook's "How Classy Are You" test. Although, I'm not a user, I thought it was a very interesting test. Never in ages would I have thought Facebook could have conjured up my new mantra. It's totally fitting and I'm sticking with it!

HOME OR APARTMENT REVAMP!

“Why don’t you get a girl or interior decorator/consultant to design your apartment?” , said a family member recently. My response: “I’m the only creator for my space.”

Certain Gents, tend to rest on others for creating the aesthetic feeling for their abode. We’re then totally dissatisfied because the finished results are not reflecting who we are. Rather it’s bearing other peoples style-feel and design desires.

So, as you readers are aware, I’ve taking on the daunting and exhilarating task of lacing my studio (It’s turning out DOPE!!!). That means painting abstracts; knocking walls out; polyurethane-ing (sp) bricks, hand building (best part!); ridding old memorabilia and other essential renovation endeavors. I’ve learned your truest [architectural] style resides within. To understand home designing with proper proportion and streamlining it takes a required focus. Since embarking on the construction journey (lol), I have found magazines and HGTV (my older brother and I are hook) to be great guidelines to help layout your space. These referrals give you ways to incorporate your already visional ideas and plans.

Recommendations for Gents designing their space:

1. Seek out the best Home publications (Domino, Metropolitan Home, Elle Décor, Architectural Digest!!, Robb Report, NY Times Home & Garden section and many more...) that gives clear insight on how to proportionally deck your abode up. In addition, I’ve checked out store catalogs (Pottery Barn, Crate and Barrel (!!), Ikea, and West Elm) for additional tips. Lastly, my go-to website: Apartment Therapy (get to see other homeowners design savvy creations).

2. Who are you? Whatever you answer let it show in your home. If you’re an art enthusiast or rock collector inject these likings throughout your space. In addition, don’t be afraid to put these items in unconventional places (Bathroom, Kitchen); it only kicks up the eccentricity Gents!

3. Proportion. Proportion. Know your space and utilize it Gents. If you have large spaces show it off with your furnishing arrangements. I strongly believe larger spaces must have the airy feel (like a museum exhibit). As for smaller more intimate dwellings, YOU must achieve the larger-than-large effect. Achieving this effect will require some investing in shelving systems (The Container Store or Muji) or bookcases (preferably floor-to-ceiling). You want to bring apartment visitors eyes upward and not around. A personal favorite of mine is floor mirrors—it automatically enlarges the apartment size.

4. Great finds are always good for the space (large or small)! I’m not going to lie, I’ve been a furniture freegan (Google the term). I found some good pieces on casuals walks (the painting pictured below was a $2 street find) in my neighborhood. Don’t be scured to nab street finds. If it’s not dilapidated brush it off and prop it front-and-center. Also, thrift shops (Goodwill, Salvation Army, etc.) are great places for rare figurines or décor. As the say: Another man’s trash is another man’s treasure!

5. Good furniture. It’s key you buy solid timeless pieces for the space. Your furniture should not be one-stop. Meaning, it should travel with you for years upon years. If it’s timeless, it never dates (like a crisp white oxford). Get neutral colors and pieces that can backdrop your other color choices seamlessly. West Elm, Pottery Barn, Jonathan Adler, Bo Concepts, just to name a strong few are great furniture stores with timeless furnishings.

These were some tips I’ve learned before and throughout the home renovation process and now I pass it forward to you GENTS.

Sidebar: If you’re a NYC habitant or visiting this weekend visit the Architectural Home Design Show at PIER 94 (12th Ave @ 55th Street). It’s the best home design show to hit the East Coast I believe. The ‘Home Furniture Show’ at the Javits is cool but I feel this show is more edited. I’m definitely going to walk the floor and excite the furniture senses a little. Plus, don’t hesitate to say howdy if you see Mr. MSR!

Best street find to date!

MR. MSR : SPRING FAVES AND RECOMMENDED ESSENTIALS

The nice NYC weather today ignited my Spring senses (I'm not enjoying the wintry drab one bit). I'm yearning for more warm weather to spring up quickly. I'm extra excited Daylight Savings is soon approaching (my normal mark to anticipate Spring) and I can revel in late dinners under the bright skies. Before I run down my Spring must-haves I’m doubly happy to say BARNEYS new men’s catalog (you’ll understand my joyful rant once you grab one.props to the stylist.) has me on my toes for light breeze and 60+ temps.

Stock up on these key must-haves, and you’ll be well equipped to weather Spring:

*Trench Coat

I believe a trench coat should be your first spring essential (mentioned in earlier post) to conquering the seasonal breezes. I’ve been noticing the celeb GENTS incorporating ‘trench coats’ with key looks: Casual to Dressy. After seeing LeBron,in the high collar-bone trench, I scoured the NYC streets for a comparable match. To my surprise, and equally great timing (all Gods doing) Mr. MSR snatched up his Spring “trenchy” from label. A key pointer when purchasing: Find a trench that suits your frame impeccably. The right fit always trumps! Overall, consider the TRENCH COAT an investment that will continue to bear returns season-after-season.

MARC by MARC JACOBS Brushed Twill Trench Coat
Retail: $528.00

*
[Sturdy] Umbrella

We're all aware that April showers bears May flowers. As savvy Gents we have forgotten the 'umbrella' and took likens to hats to shelter the rain drops. Instead of soaking your Spring newsboys (J. Crew have some great madras ones) opt for sturdy and dandy umbrella that’s guarantee to shield your dome. To weather the plentiful April rains, I suggest you jet over to the MoMa Store for the Sky Umbrella by Tibor Kalman. Best part to having a ‘Sky’ : Looking up to a clear sky despite the gloominess on the umbrella rim outskirts. In addition, it’s very affordable compared to MoMa’s always vertical prices.

Sky Umbrella by Tibor Kalman

Retail: $48.00

*Lenses

Aviators. Rimless. Square frame. Oversize.

All these styles work great for Spring. The only thing to consider in sunglass pre-purchase mode is: find what works best for your (say, MY) face. The worst thing to see in the spring and/or summer is someone sporting ill fitting frames. It automatically kills your look (even a well-styled look). Certain eye wear shops (highly recommend Solstice!! they always stock current styles) often measure your face or have you try various styles to identify your ideal frame. To bloom strong this season I recommend the following brands: Ray Ban, Roberto Cavalli (produces exquisite frames), Diesel (don’t sleep on this brand), Dior, and Gucci. Last note, veer off from the traditional darker tints and take on lighter hues: Rose Gold, Amber, and Gold Shimmer.

Limited Edition Roberto Cavalli Sunglasses (check the signature snake detailing out!)

Retail: $640.00+

*Sneakers

Toughen up your khakis and ginghams with a sleek athletic sneaker pairing. I’m crazy for 'Stan Smiths' in the Spring! It’s a timeless choice you can’t hiccup with. I feel sneakers are great for the warmer spring days. Your sneaker style should always boast a classic design aesthetic. Why? It segues effortlessly from day to night. Gents I strongly recommend Adidas’ Rod Lavers; Any Raf Simons; Common Projects dark low-tops; Alessandro Dell'Acqua darker patent (real Spring trend emerging) styles, just to name a few.

PF Flyers fresh uppers

Retail: $75.00

*Lightweight Pants

Sometimes those 'Ernst Sewn's' can wear you down with its bespoke rigidness. I’m sure certain Ernst fans can relate. Lightweights are rescuers for those overbearing [denim] days. I find most street-wearable lightweight pants come in drawstring styles, with linen finishes. I find them still functional for heavy laden errand times. They’re also a superb casual choice to throw on for Sunday brunch.

Calvin Klein Drawstring Linen Pants
Retail: Only $40.00

*Shirts

I normally purchase Classic White V-necks for the Spring, but Global warming has forced me to lengthen my shirt sleeve. I just have a inkling the weather isn’t going to be stable for only short sleeves. So I think stocking up on your spring long-sleeved shirts (madras, gingham, strips, floral (yea, bold up) ) wouldn’t be a bad choice.

Harvie & Hudson Red Gingham Shirt (Mr. MSR favorite!)

Retail: $99.00

I’m confident these essentials will pleasingly enable your swagger to shine extra-bright this Spring.

KANYE HEARTS [PARIS] FASHION

The only caption I can derive for this photo is to say, "Mr. West gets it. He lives it. And always shows it." Cheers to great style Kanye!

P.C.(Postcaption): The casual Gent to Kanye's right is the infamous Stephen Gan. This creative co-started the glorified Visionaire, Vman, and V. In addition, he's the mastermind--ladies-- behind the artistic spreads in Harper's Bazzar.

An excerpt such as this always reaffirms Mr. MS R viewpoints about Kanye West being a double threat: Ultra-Fashionable and Musical Genius. I obtained his thoughts about Paris and it’s offering from his acclaimed blog.

“I just love the clothes! Lex and I are not there 2 take pictures... I don't have an album about 2 drop... my tour is sold out... I love fashion and this is one of the funnest things we can make time for! I totally love and respect any designer that won't let me come 2 there show... it's their show... they don't owe me anything... Balenciaga is one of the illest lines right now and I don't feel any type of way about not getting in! There's always a catch 22 in being a celeb ... your motives are always questioned... but only time will show my true love MY FIRST LOVE is for fashion and I appreciate just being in a position 2 afford 2 be able 2 spend a week in Paris visiting shows. I wish everyone could have this experience, the new music you hear, the new people you meet and most of all the beautiful clothes! I understand that some designers don't want all that unnecessary commotion at there shows, that's what I mean by "I get a lot of attention" ... I feel like music and fashion don't bridge enough... at least not as much as it did in the 80's when Madonna and Michael actually influenced designers... there was a give and take. I never use my blog 2 clear stuff up... but this is so close 2 my heart I had 2 say something... Anyone saying something negative has it wrong, they've got me wrong... I just want 2 make great art on every level and fashion shows are one ofthe best forms of art in the world. Thank you Paris again for the inspiration!!! "

THE ROW GETS A [BESPOKE] LIFT

I loved reading this article (wriiten by Taraneh Ghajar) discussing the New Saville Row. It was on ASMALL WORLD (the social network for global tastemakers) and I thought I'd share it with the GENTS of MaleStyle Review. Due to site strictures (This site doesn't kid around. Doing this can result in full ban) I can't link the article.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Reinventing Sartorial Traditions: THE NEW SAVILLE ROW

Behind an unmarked green door in Central London, a Savile Row tailor fitted a client with a bespoke suite on an early November afternoon. If you are picturing an interaction between a stuffy gentleman and a tight-lipped tradesman, think again.

The tailor in question was the maverick, Mark Powell, and the client was Dexy’s Midnight Runners frontman, Kevin Rowland. In front of the mirror, Rowland turned to admire his 1930s high-waisted, wide-leg Donegal tweed trousers and extreme cut-away jacket. “Mark understands me,” Rowland told ASW. “We can spend an hour talking about turn-ups.” Powell left the room only to return holding a remarkably similar pair of tweeds.

“I just made these for Keira Knightley,” he declared.

Welcome to the new Savile Row. The elegant London street, where bespoke craftsmen have been in business since 1733, is still the heart of exquisite British tailoring but it’s the younger players who are reinventing the meaning of bespoke. Their innovation is beckoning younger, hipper – and occasionally female – clients on to the Row to be measured up for luxe made-to-order suits.

Bespoke tailoring comes from the expression ‘be’spoken’ meaning that the tailor’s cloth has literally been spoken for by a client. When you walk into a bespoke tailor’s atelier, you are opting for a distinct set of craftsmanship principles: specific measurement technique, straight shoulders, a narrow syce, and a well-defined arm are standards.

A bespoke suit is perhaps one of the original proofs that a quality product takes time. A suit takes an average of six weeks and three fittings to finish because every detail is hand-sewn. But according to Ozwald Boateng, a Savile Row bespoke tailor, tradition needed an infusion of the new. “If traditions don’t evolve, they die,” said Boateng, who is also the creative director of Givenchy. “Savile Row wasn’t evolving.”

Boateng and other tailors, who are a part of the New Bespoke Movement, maintain painstaking bespoke techniques but challenge the old school bespoke firms’ subtle, traditional take on the standard suit. They have personalized bespoke even more, offering creative and more individualized looks. Below are the best of the Row’s new innovators.

Ozwald Boateng

The youngest tailor to open on Savile Row, Boateng talks like an artist, looks like a model and insists that he wants “to make all men beautiful.” Boateng’s look proves that brilliance and elegance go hand in hand. He skillfully uses bold colors in monotones and patterns to highlight his sharp suit lines. Clients include Daniel Day-Lewis, Laurence Fishburne and Keanu Reeves. Bespoke suits start at £3,000.

http://www.ozwaldboateng.co.uk

Mark Powell

Famed for his sharp three-piece suits, Powell also knows how to combine individuality and fine tailoring to create edgy, dapper looks. He understands women too and has dressed Keira Knightley, Naomi Campbell and Bianca Jagger. Powell’s male patrons include George Clooney and David Bowie. Suits start at around £1,500.

http://www.markpowellbespoke.co.uk

Kilgour

Established in 1882, Kilgour was revived in 2004 with Carlo Brandelli as the creative leader. Cary Grant, Fred Astaire, Jude Law and Daniel Craig are amongst the gentlemen who have donned Kilgour suits. The label distills sleek functionalism in its lean silhouettes. Expect charcoal mohair single button suits and jackets lined with polka-dotted silk. Look out for hand-blown Italian glass cufflinks in sky blue or powder pink and silk knit ties. Suits range from £1,500 to £5,000.

http://www.kilgour.eu/

Timothy Everest

From his beautifully restored retro gentleman’s atelier in Spitalfields, Everest crafts trim two-button slanted pocket jackets and plain trousers for the likes of Colin Firth, Gordon Brown and Tom Cruise. Everest, whose signature is his Spitalfields flower-patterned tie, also does bespoke denim. Suits start at £2,200.

http://www.timothyeverest.co.uk/

Richard James

Dandifying the traditional British menswear look, James’ suits are recognizable for their elegant elongation. The jackets are waisted with deeper side vents and come with one to three buttons. James isn’t afraid of color or texture, much to the delight of his fans, who include Pete Doherty, Hugh Dancy and Mick Jagger. Suits start at £2,700.

MS R :THIS WEEK IN STYLE

I can't even muster the words to add to caption for this shot. It's simply priceless!

Young fashion-forward I can tell for sure. Great job Sartorialist.

I came across this old shot recently; I enjoyed both subjects style (Mr. MS R needs that blazer in his life) and openness for fun.

Sidebar: The skinny tie reflects stronger with narrow spread collar Gents.

Mr. Benjamin Bixby [fashionably] promoting his new flick on TRL. Is it Mr. MS R, or has Andre been channeling the Paris look extra hard?

Sidebar: I think his linen pocket square is by RODA (exclusively for BARNEYS) . Gents, linen pocket squares is a must-have for Spring. Ditch those cotton handkerchiefs and refresh your pockets with premium linen.

This shot looks straight from a movie still. Kanye storming Paris runway show with girlfriend in toe. I'm not mad at the Moncler puffer vest and 80's electro fames. Who cares if Balenciaga denied you at their show doors, you still styled at Chanel, and sparkled for Swarovski.

MS R DEBONAIR: SHEG ARANMOLATE

A new compliment for MaleStyle Review.
This section came into play after being introduced to our 1st MaleStyle Review Debonair: Sheg Aranmolate.

Real Name: Olusegun (Olu-sheg-un) "Sheg" Aranmolate

Age: 24

Occupation: Medical Researcher

Sheg Aranmoate hails from Lagos, Nigeria. I was introduced to Sheg through Oprah’s new show: OPRAH’s BIG GIVE (it's more surreal than reality based. show premieres tomorrow 9/8c on ABC). From exclusive excerpts I glimpsed Mr. Sheg stylin’ while equally being a big giver. His clothing choices: Suits, Sleek Blazers (the super-white I previewed is a killer); Waist Leather Jackets; and Suede cropped outerwear’s, just to name few.

On BIG GIVE, Nate Berkus (show host) refers to Sheg as “Mr. Style.”

“Mr. Style is what I call Sheg; every time I see him he looks as if he just stepped out a men fashion magazine (what a quote to offer).”

The 24-year-old has since earned a bachelor's degree in biochemistry and molecular biology and a master's degree in applied molecular biology. In addition to his educational pedigree, the debonair just finished penning a book (iACTUATE: 100 days of inspiration) on very simple reasons to be inspired and make a difference.

**Each week or whenever, I’ll feature a Gent who I truly feel embodies a MaleStyle Review Debonair. If you believe you or someone you know represents male style exceptionally well, and don’t mind answering a few random questions for our readers, submit a stylish shot (preferably head-to-toe) and contact information to: malestylereview@gmail.com for consideration.

BARACK OBAMA COLLAGE

The recent Barack Obama video sparked this post.

It’s a post that shows our future president in a real yet honest light. We often see the brush up Obama, and not the candid more younger-lad Obama. As our future president, I think it’s good for the John Q. public to know his formative years (glimpse into how he’ll handle is presidency) and as you’ll see below the man originates from good stock. From reading his books (Dreams of My Father defined him for Mr. MSR) you instantly become in tune with his remarkable story. I gathered some photos to gives a brief visual representation of the man—GOD faithfully willing—we’ll soon call President.

This ultra-stylish shot was taken his 2nd year at Harvard when he became president of the Harvard Law Review. The swagger in his lax pose is adding a lot of luxe to his anorak.

WE ARE THE ONES: VOTE BARACK

Will.I.Am strikes directorial gold with his 2nd video for Mr. Obama. The piece candidness almost lures you to Texas to vote or re-vote for Barack. Besides banking on his celeb leveraging, his subjects (some non-celebs as well) conveyed a sense of ‘realness’ that shimmers through the screen. I believe the video was well produced and I can bet there’s another dedication video already brewing.

Sidebar: What great timing for the upcoming 2nd Super Tuesday (Texas).

Levels of consciousness

"The greatest discovery of my generation is that man can alter his life simply by altering his attitude of mind."Here is one perspective on levels of consciousness and some descriptive words to help us identify the differences:

Not conscious - instinctual, follower
Subconscious - habitual, robotic, reactive
Conscious - aware, intelligent, conceptual, reflective
Super conscious - intuitive, guiding, truthful, loving, universal

Reflect on how you typically move through your day. As we use our minds more consciously, we open up to the super consciousness.

Utilizing your conscious mind to direct the subconscious mind to enter into communication and harmony with the universal mind is the secret of personal power.
